An antique is an object which belongs to a past era valued for its artistry, craftsmanship, rarity and age. The term originates from the Latin word “antiquus” which means “old” or “ancient”.

Antique experts and collectors have different factors in considering or defining antique, but a common denominator is the age of the items. An object has to be made from an earlier period than the present. Moreover, an object has to be at least 100 years old to qualify as antique.

Other antique experts and collectors regard a hundred year old object not antique enough compared to an item that is at least 300 years old. An antique item in one country may not be considered antique in another country at all. Thus, defining what antique also varies from person to person or from place to place.

Aside from the age of a piece, some antique experts would only describe an object as antique if it is made of the highest quality and features a striking ors one-of-a-kind design.

Antiquing Defined

Antiquing is the art of antique collection. It involves the process of shopping, identifying, negotiating, bargaining and buying so called antique items. Antiques may range from pieces of furniture such as a table, chair, desk, or dresser among others; a piece of jewellery; kitchen pieces such as tableware, dinner sets or pots; sculptures; paintings; maps; coins; stamps; books; other home pieces such as clocks; and carpets as well. Antique furniture is one of the most commonly collected items because of its practical uses.

Antiques can be made of varied materials such as fabric, wood, porcelain, ivory or glass. Antiques are sold in antique shops all over the world. The internet is also a rich source of information for antique collectors. Several websites pertain to antiques which are useful for antique collectors, both old and new.

Antique collection depends on the interests and preferences of antique collectors. Some antique collectors prefer to collect antiques of a specific period only. Mostly, devoted antique collectors spend considerable time and money to acquire a piece to add in the collection.

Antiquing is indeed an expensive hobby but other antique collectors purchase antiques for potential resale and antiquing also refers to the process of making an object appear antique.

Antiques and its Purpose

Antiques are significant artefacts of the past which help historians and archaeologists from understanding the earlier period of human history. All antiques are valuable because these objects represent the past. However, some are considered priceless because they are vital in the recognition and education of the history of a specific place in a specific time so these antiques are placed in museums. Other antiques can be bought in various antique shops for the satisfaction of antique collectors. Antiques are also considered heirlooms hence, also priceless.

Monetary Value of Antiques

The value of antique depends on the number of items available in the market, the condition of the item, and the amount that collectors would pay for it.

Antique appraisal, or the process of determining the value of antiques, is essential to every antique collector. Finding a qualified antique appraiser requires meticulous research. Antique appraisers have different specialization on antiques. An appraiser whose forte is on antique ceramics may not be able to provide valuable details on antique jewellery.

It is also important to note that some pieces of antiques are recommended for antique restoration while others are more valuable as they appear to be. A professional antique restorer provides expert help in determining what needs to undergo essential restoration to add more value to the antique and restore it to its original appearance and function.

NCAA or National Collegiate Athletic Association is considered to be the biggest Collegiate Athletic Association in the world with its head quarter in Indiana. It is a voluntary organization that frames the athletic programs of a number of Universities and Colleges in U.S.A. On the other hand, collectibles are those items which have some monetary value and are considered to give the collector pleasure and satisfaction. Therefore, NCAA collectibles refer to those items that are produced or manufactured after obtaining the license from the NCAA, such as these http://www.sports-collectibles-store.com/collegedoublerungbarstools.html. Those of you who love to collect items relating to sports would love the NCCA collectibles because they look really good and they will be a kind of pride and joy when you place them in your home among your collections.

Some of the collectibles include the NCCA fan flags. This item is especially popular among the youths for the purpose of cheering their favorite teams in any of the games. There are also a number of autographed items which you can look out for like an autographed football or basketball. Not only does the autographed football or basketball have the space for the autographs of your favorite players but it also has the logo or symbol of the NCAA on it. One other item which will hold your interest is the NCAA travel mug which you can use to drink your coffee or any cold drink. This mug has been made with stainless steel and has a double wall and as such, it will keep your drink warm or cold.

An increasing number of people are now taking an interest in the NCAA collectibles because sports collection is gaining popularity day by day. These items can be brought from the market; internet or you can even buy them from those people who do not wish to collect the items any more for their personal reasons. In order to collect these items, you will need adequate amount of money because these items do not come cheap. Those items that are cheap can not be the real NCAA items. There are a number of items from NCAA which might interest you and you can check them out from your local stores or through the internet. The best way to look out for the NCAA collectibles would be through the internet because you will not have to hop from one store to the other.

Watching The Antique Road Show and other programs that appraise collectibles often gives people the idea that they might have something valuable hidden away in their attic or basement. Others simply want to purchase a specific antique or one with potential for an antique in the future. But what exactly is a good investment when buying a collectible? Costs are intimidating, but the uncertainty of the investment’s worth is even scarier. It’s so easy to be taken in by an object that looks like the real thing, but unless you know what to look for, you could end up wasting your money. Not every antique dealer is as honest as we’d like them to be. Some just want to make a sale on an easy mark – you. Knowing some basic guidelines can help you make wise purchases and investments in objects with the potential you’re looking for.

Know the Basics

Valuable collectibles generally include a few categories – art, fine wines, dolls, rare books, and pop culture memorabilia. When making an investment, look for items in these categories if you plan on selling it for a profit in the future. One-of-a-kind items, such as an original painting or a first edition of a classic piece of literature are sure to appreciate in value. Other things, like an Elvis album or a Rolling Stones t-shirt might be less certain. Consider the market and how many of these items are in circulation before getting too excited.

Find Something You Love

Start collecting with items you enjoy. You’ll have more fun and you’ll likely find better deals. For instance, if you love 19th Century authors, you will be more inclined to read about their works and educate yourself as to their value. You’ll enjoy going to the trade shows and conventions for your particular collectible and meet other like-minded people with the same passion as you for a particular item.

Don’t Buy Without Knowing

Before buying any collectible, be sure you have a complete understanding of how to assess its value. Familiarize yourself with the different release dates, characteristic markings or abnormalities in the product before spending your money on it. Study it closely and do your homework to get the most for your money.

Garage Sales are Your Friend

If you enjoy gathering collectibles, garage sales, barn sales, and estate sales are full of opportunities for the serious collector. Most people just want to get rid of stuff that they consider “junk” without bothering to find out if it could be valuable. Lucky for you, these overlooked items are available at a fraction of the cost. Swap meets and flea markets also have a large number of potentially valuable items at bargain rates – if you know what to look for!

Buying and selling collectibles is a fun way to supplement your income, in fact, many people make a living by doing this. The secret is knowing as much as you can about the things you collect. Be thorough in your inspections and try to find items that will only appreciate over the years.

With the price of everything going down lately, people who purchase collectibles may be looking at their shelves full of well-loved pieces and thinking, “They’re not worth anything anymore! What will I do?” It may seem counter-intuitive, but the best thing might be to expand your collection. Just think about it: What are the smart investors doing right now on Wall Street? They are holding onto their portfolios and spending a little money to pick up some great bargains. That’s what you should be doing with your collectibles, too.

“To get a great deal” is the best reason to spend money in any economy, especially when it comes to collectibles. While it may not be the best time to sell off your own collection, you may see deals now on pieces that you don’t have that you would never see otherwise. A bonus to buying during a downswing is that, since you are buying items at a discount, the chances are good that your new collectibles will go up in value as the economy gets stronger.

Another reason to invest in collectibles in an economic downturn is if you’ve been thinking of starting a collection for someone else. If you have a daughter or niece to whom you were planning on giving a few pieces, those starter items now can be found at great prices. Often times merchants will bundle pieces together that make great starter sets and offer them at a discount. Plus, everyone knows that the most expensive time to collect is when you first start out, so now is the time to make those initial costs a bit less.

Remember the most important reason to collect anything: because it means something special to you. Can you really put a price tag on a collection if you purchased it for sentimental reasons? If your collection is making you happy then it is giving you value and no one can argue with that. Artwork that you collect because it makes you feel relaxed, for example, is like investing in your mental health. Figurines that feature different emotions or family members can memorialize events or honor loved ones while they expand your collection. Eventually, when the time comes to whittle down your collection, these items become perfect gifts for family and friends. If you’ve ever watched those shows where experts estimate the value of a person’s antiques or collectibles, you know that most people say that it’s nice to know how much it’s worth, but they’re not interested in selling due to family history with the item(s). A collection may have monetary value, but it all boils down to how much it means to you personally.

One of the best bonuses of collecting is the sense of community you get from talking and trading with other collectors. The internet has now given us the ability to talk to people all over the world who are interested in the same things you are. So even if you don’t feel like changing the size of your collection today, communicating with other people who appreciate the things you do can improve your mood, no matter the state the economy.

Soccer jerseys may well surpass all other team sport uniform
items in wear ability and collect ability. A serious fan may
have no greater earthly possession than their favorite team’s
jersey, and if they were able to get an autographed one, all the
better. An article of clothing, made for durability and comfort
on the soccer field can quickly become an artistic focal point
in the fan’s home. Many fans display their beloved jerseys in
cases especially designed for the purpose.

There are currently over 5000 soccer jerseys available for
bidding on at EBay, which is known as the world’s auction house.
A current jersey from the Brazilian National team, signed by all
the players, is listed at 300.00, plus shipping. It seems
doubtful that once purchased this jersey will be wore by its
proud owner, rather it will probably be more of decorative item,
and perhaps kept as an investment.

Looking further, I discovered an incredible piece of football
history. A jersey worn during the Brazil-Austria match on July
11, 1971. A Brazilian home jersey from a match just months after
Brazil had won the World Cup. But wait, there’s more! Pele,
instrumental in Brazil winning the World Cup, was the wearer of
this shirt! He scored the only goal in the match that day
against Austria, and signed the shirt, which has never been
laundered. It was to be Pele’s last game with Brazil, also. The
next lucky owner of this remarkably collectible jersey will also
have a letter of authenticity signed by Pele. The going price is
$27,445.00!

The historic Pele jersey may be out of many a fan’s financial
reach, however authentic replica shirts are available for modest
costs, and it won’t be sacrilege to wear them. Today’s stars
also represent a way to get into collecting signed jerseys, at
prices within the reach of many more fans than the vintage
jerseys are bringing. David Beckman and Mia Hamm are examples of
current and recent stars who’s signed jerseys are worth
considering investing in before they increase too much more in
value.

Whether you are a player, or fanatical armchair coach, wearing
and collecting jerseys is a great way to connect with your
favorite players and team, and if they happen to go up in value,
all the better. Owning a piece of sports history has its own
value, that a non-fan may never be able to appreciate.

From a parent’s stand point, their child’s soccer jerseys are a
wonderful way to mark the years, and chart the growth of their
own little Pele. Hanging each seasons jersey around your child’s
room will be an inspiration to them, as it shows how you value
their efforts. Your young player may not have been the star
striker, or the glorified ‘do or die’ goalie, but they did their
best, and enjoyed the battle field. Some day when you’re your
soccer player has gone off to college, these jerseys may prove
as valuable to you as a signed jersey from a star player.

If you collect porcelain dolls, you have probably already heard of Ellen Stanbury, and if you are considering collecting porcelain dolls, Ellen Stanbury dolls are a good place to start. These porcelain dolls, created by this excellent craftswoman and doll-making teacher, are some of the most coveted collectibles. Ellen Stanbury’s porcelain dolls have won several awards, and they are sold all over the world. Here is just a sample of her doll designs.

• Phantom of the Opera – This doll won first place at a Canadian doll show in 1993. Stanbury put so much detail into the doll and his costume (styled after the Phantom of the Opera character from the story), that it was an immediate favorite among the judges. The doll’s detail includes the “half-mask” that the Phantom character is famous for, and his clothing includes a top hat and tuxedo. For the Canadian doll show, he was showcased on a music box that looked like a stage and played music from the Phantom of the Opera musical.
• Tessa – Tessa is an original sculpture porcelain doll that portrays a young mother holding her own baby. The mother and the baby are wearing matching gowns, which are intricately designed and made out of Swiss and French lace. This porcelain doll has a very animated, yet soft and feminine look that is enchanting.
• Googlie – The Ellen Stanbury “Googlie” doll is a whimsical design with very large eyes and very round protruding cheeks, giving it a rather “cupie doll” look. This is a fun porcelain doll, less serious than some other of Stanbury’s porcelain dolls, but nevertheless a wonderful piece. Dressed in a light, milkmaid-type dress and hat, with a small porcelain goat next to her, people can’t help but look at this doll and smile.

These are just a handful of the wonderful porcelain dolls that Ellen Stanbury has created over the years. Ellen sells her dolls through a company that she and her husband run called “Stanec’s Dolls Ltd”, and you can order her dolls over the Internet by going to www.stanecdolls.com. When you go to this website, you will not only see a catalog of the dolls that are for sale, you will also learn more about Ellen Stanbury and what she does. Ellen is known as a “Grand Master Dollmaker”, and she is a certified Doll Artisan Guild Instructor. Anyone who purchases one of Ellen Stanbury’s beautiful porcelain dolls will be investing in a collectible that will only grow in value over the years.

Co-Founder of Mattel Toy Company Ruth Handler probably had no idea that the doll she designed in 1959, which she named “Barbie”, would still be so popular almost fifty years later. The Barbie doll has been around so long that its first original models are now highly coveted collectibles that can bring in some very high prices.

One of the reasons for the Barbie doll’s success, right from the beginning and up until today, is her ability to change with the times. When Barbie first came out she was original in the fact that she was not a baby doll, but a doll that represented a young woman. Young girls could play with this doll and pretend that they were “grown up”, and through Barbie could imagine themselves in different grown up roles and situations. Playing with a Barbie doll was a great way for little girls to dream about what they would like to be like when they were older – and it still is.

Although today’s Barbie looks slightly different from the first Barbie, she still has the same basic design. What have really changed over the years are the Barbie clothes and Barbie accessories. Barbie has always reflected the times, and her clothes and accessories over the years have shown that. The first Barbies wore mostly dresses, and sometimes tasteful bathing suits, and their accessories included mostly purses, hats, and jewelry. The Ken doll came along to be Barbie’s boyfriend, and then her wardrobe also consisted of prom dresses and wedding gowns. During the late 60’s, Barbie started sporting a wardrobe that was a little more “groovy”, and eventually she started driving her own car and even living in her own apartment. Throughout the years, Barbie has become more “independent”, and has had several types of jobs and the accessories to go with them.

Today’s Barbie is hip, fashionable, fits well into the fast pace of society, and little girls still love her. With modern technology being what it is, Barbie has now branched out into video and the Internet. The website www.barbie.com has several interactive games for children to play, and children can also buy videos where they can watch a cartoon Barbie have all sorts of adventures. The actual Barbie doll, however, is still what is most popular with young girls. Through her they are still role-playing; testing out different roles that they might want to try out when they grow up.

If you are a wrestling fan, then you probably enjoy collecting memorabilia that is associated with your favorite sport of superstar. Everything from t-shirts and books to trading cards are available, but perhaps the most popular is that of action figures. The reason is because these small collectibles bare the resemblance of a wrestling superstar and take up very little space in the display case. In addition, when they are first released, wrestling action figures are very inexpensive.

As the years progress, wrestling action figures can significantly increase in value. As a general rule, anything that is left in it’s original packaging is more valuable because, you guessed it, most people take them out and play with them. Action figures are very popular among children, which is why it is so often difficult to find a specific wrestling action figure in it’s original packaging. In addition, collectibles that are kept in mint/near mint condition inevitably increase in value much more than something that has visible scratches or other defects.

If you are a collector who is also purchasing wrestling action figures for investment, it’s not a bad idea to buy two of each item. With this approach, you will have one wrestling action figure for the display and one that you can keep in it’s original packaging for investment. If you are thinking like an investor, then you already know that any collectible that is produced in a limited edition will prove to be the most valuable in years to come. Additionally, those limited edition pieces are often higher in value if they have a low serial number. For instance, if there were to be 5,000 wrestling action figures produced of a certain superstar, the ones that may prove to gain in value the most could very well be those with the lowest number in that edition. An example would be 10/5,000 or 100/5,000. As a general rule, the closer you can get to the first collectible made, the more valuable your object becomes.

There is no shortage of ways to find wrestling action figures, with the newest releases being made widely available at most retail stores. The more rare collectibles will often be found in a sports collectibles store or at an annual memorabilia show. If you opt for the latter, be ready to shuck out some bucks if you plan to shop because show dealers are knowledgeable in the products that they sell and they aren’t likely to be offering a bargain. It is significantly expensive to set up a booth at a memorabilia show, so dealers tend to bring their top dollar merchandise for just such an occasion.

The internet is a virtual haven for all things collectible, including wrestling action figures. If you are looking for a rarity or just browsing for a mini replica of your favorite wrestling superstar, you are more likely to find it online than anywhere else. With a world of retailers, there really is no other place to shop that offers a better selection. If you want to be the one to set the price, check out the online auction sites and see if you can snag a bargain.

Movies have a life all their own. Besides the entertainment value they provide, there are also the lasting material things that remain as reminders of these wonderful (and not so wonderful) films. These things serve as reminders to the movie going public and may have some intrinsic value as well. Examples of the above are the movie posters, collectibles, props and other miscellaneous items that are produced by the ad agencies, special effects artists, hobby enthusiasts, toy manufacturers, and even movie enthusiasts.

One of the most familiar movie items is the advertising posters one sees outside the theater. These can be quite colorful and are designed to stimulate one’s imagination and lure the potential viewer into the theater. These posters have been divided into the particular genre such as: Westerns, Horror, Sci-Fi, and War. Some of these divisions can have special groups of movies all unto themselves. For instance: Star Wars or James Bond. One poster for the 1967 James Bond spoof, “Casino Royale” is presently selling for $300 USD and a poster for the first James Bond movie, “Dr. No” (1962) is selling for $3,000 USD. Posters have become such big business that there is a company that specializes in restoring them using a linen background. Their value just increases with time.

Another group of movie items that is much sought after are the props used in making the movies. Today with computer graphics some of the characters, creatures, or other items may be totally fabricated in a computer generated model. There are still many props used on the big and little screens that are much in demand. Miniatures of much larger items such as space ships, landscapes, cities, or creatures are very detailed and amazingly real in appearance. The problem with props is that they are very limited and often times kept by the studio for further possible movies or they are dismantled. In this category there are also the replicas made by model companies and toy manufacturers. After all, if you can’t have the real thing you can also get (and afford) a replica.

Still another group of movie/TV related items that might be related to props are the statues and action figures. The statues are in a single pose and are usually sold by model companies. The action figures are designed to be handled and are made to be more durable. There is a growing market for these action figures. Their value is much higher if they are not removed from the box. These are essentially toys that are collected in the hopes that in the future they will have accrued in value a great deal.
